How to choose freshwater pearls

Evaluating a freshwater pearl comes down to just five key factors: size, shape, luster, surface quality and color

Freshwater pearls have become a favorite among jewelry lovers for their warm, elegant look and affordable price. But with so many options on the market, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Evaluating a freshwater pearl comes down to just five key factors: size, shape, luster, surface quality and color. Once you understand these, picking the perfect pearl becomes easy

Size: Bigger Is Rarer

Freshwater pearls typically range from 2mm to 12mm:
· 2–5mm — Tiny "rice pearls," great for layered necklaces or stacked bracelets
· 6–8mm — The most popular, classic, versatile, and budget-friendly
· 9–10mm — Big, ideal for a single-strand necklace or pendant
· 11mm+ — Rare and significantly more expensive
Tips:  As a rule of thumb, every 1mm increase in size can double or even triple the price.

Shape: Choose what you like

Freshwater pearls come in a stunning variety of shapes. Here's how they're graded:
· Round — near-perfect sphere, Single-strand necklaces, stud earrings — highest value
· Near round — Slightly off, but barely noticeable to the naked eye, great value for everyday wear
· Oval/Drop — Symmetrical oval or teardrop, suit for pendants and drop earrings ,elegant and flattering
· Button — Flat on one side, domed on the other, good for rings and bezel settings
· Baroque Irregular, one-of-a-kind shapes, better for designer pieces, statement jewelry
Tips:  Round pearls are much rare and more valuable . And if you love unique designs, baroque pearls offer an organic, artistic look you won't find anywhere else.

Luster: The Soul of a Pearl

Luster is the single most important quality factor. It determines whether a pearl looks "alive" or "dull." Luster is typically graded into four levels:
· Excellent (Mirror-like) — Reflection is sharp and clear, like looking into a tiny mirror
· Good (Bright) — Reflection is fairly clear, with high brightness
· Fair (Medium) — Some shine, but reflection is blurry
· Poor (Dull) — No shine, looks chalky or flat
Tips: Always prioritize luster over size or shape — a smaller pearl with great luster will always look more premium than a larger dull one

Surface Quality: Nature's Fingerprints, Not Flaws

Since pearls are natural products, surface imperfections like growth lines, tiny pits, or bumps are completely normal. Here's how they're classified:
· Flawless / Microscopically Blemished — Virtually no visible marks; the most expensive
· Lightly Blemished — Minor marks only visible upon close inspection
· Moderately Blemished — Visible marks but no influence on overall beauty
· Heavily Blemished — Obvious marks covering a large area
Tips: There's an old saying in the pearl world: "No pearl is perfect." Truly flawless natural pearls are extremely rare. For a necklace worn at social distance ,about 0.5m, slight blemishes are completely invisible and perfectly acceptable. For earrings and rings, which sit closer to the eye, you may want to go for a cleaner surface.

Color: Pick What Speaks to You

Freshwater pearls come in a rich palette of colors:
· White — The classic choice, goes with everything
· Pink — Soft and romantic, brightens the complexion
· Purple — Elegant and mysterious, from lavender to deep violet
· Gold / Champagne — Warm and luxurious
· Mixed Colors — Trendy and playful, perfect for modern stylesPearls also have overtone and orient — for example, a white pearl may have a pink or green shimmer. This is what gives each pearl its unique character.
Tips: Choose color based on your desire and personal style. Warm undertones look great with pink and champagne pearls; cool undertones shine with white and purple. The richer the overtone, the more depth and dimension the pearl has.
